Copernicus is the third ship to bear the name in Starfleet, following a 23rd-century
Oberth-class science vessel and a 24th-century
Niagara-class ship of a fairly short service life. She is one of the later run of
Odyssey-class ships, designed as a science variant of the class and equipped with mission modules containing enhanced laboratory and sensor space. The ship was designed with the express intent of acting as a deep-space mission platform, capable of supporting herself in any fight and conducting any scientific mission.
